ST ANDREW'S Church in Bebington and the local branch of the United Nations Association suffered a sad blow with the death of Mrs Thelma Hughes, writes UNA-UK Regional Development Officer Chas Raws.
"Her dedication to both was often expressed though the use of her artistic gifts, her commitment to the ideals of Church and United Nations being aptly symbolised by a memorable series of flower festivals on UN themes.
"Thelma came to Bebington in 1946 when she married Arthur Hughes. She served her church as organist and conductor of the Women's Fellowship, as well as taking responsibility for flower arranging.
"Her foresight in arranging a Sunday School in the Dower House for children on the Poulton Lancelyn estate led to the establishment of Holy Trinity Church."
As well as being a member of Bebington UNA, Mrs Hughes also worked hard for the WRVS lunch clubs and the Relief of Carers. Her funeral service at St Andrew's was conducted by the Rev Steve James.
