NESTON'S derelict station buildings are being demolished as part of a major regeneration project led by Railtrack and supported by Cheshire County Council.
Railtrack's Estates Manager, John Pengelly, said "We have received many calls for action to be taken at Neston so we have decided to demolish the buildings. A temporary waiting shelter will be erected while design and development work is carried out."
He said: "We are looking at several options for Neston and these will include two new Macemain waiting shelters and improved access for all. We are also looking at proposals to improve lighting at the site."
With completion of the station scheduled for the end of the year, Cheshire County Council has added its support to the scheme, which it believes will encourage more people to use trains.
Neston County Councillor David Rudd is delighted that renovations are taking place. He said: "It is a measure of our concern that we are contributing £25,000 towards the cost of the project."
