TOYOTA has unveiled a number of limited and special edition models guaranteed to get the pulses racing but leave wallets relatively unscathed in the run up to the S-plate registration sales rush.
Sporty offerings include the Starlet SR, Corolla SR and Celica SR, while the Starlet Sol and Solida models offer a superb combination of equipment and style at temptingly low prices. A limited edition version of the rugged Land Cruiser Colorado named the K2 is joined by the RAV4 Freesport which celebrates Toyota's sponsorship of windsurfing, paragliding and mountain biking.
Toyota's trio of sporty but affordable SR models is led off by the Starlet SR model. Developed as a cost-conscious package for the enthusiastic driver on a budget, the Starlet SR has a low group five insurance rating and a carefully tuned set of hand picked suspension parts to give responsible handling. Priced at just £9,995.
Based on the 1.6 GS three door model, the Corolla SR combines the attractive lines of the three door Corolla body with the sporty interior trim of the top of the range G6 Corolla model.
The Corolla SR's sporting intentions are underlined by special 14 inch, five-spoke Racelite alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts, striking G6 upholstery trim and charcoal coloured dash and interior plastics. Red and green SR badges, metallic paint in a choice of three colours, and a CD player with RDS tuner are unique to the Corolla SR. Just 1000 Corolla SR's will be built with an on-the-road price of just £12,995.
The Celica SR marks 25 years of rallying success. Riding on Momo 16 inch alloy wheels and chunky Pirelli 205/50 tyres, the SR's aggressive looks are finished off with a colour-keyed rear spoiler and side skirts. The front grille mesh is made from stainless steel and SR badges are fitted to the front wings.
Inside, air-condi- tioning and the latest state-of-the-art Sony tuner/cassette/CD player are fitted as standard. Only 500 Celica SR's will be made and the price is a tempting £20,950 on-the-road.
Cool blue cars for hot summers days, the two Starlet limited editions will be known as the Sol (three door only) and Solida (three and five door models). Both are available in Cool Water (blue) metallic paint only with the door mirror housings and door handles colour-keyed, as are the body side mouldings.
A light blue interior trim and yellow and blue Sol/Solida badges add to the light and airy feel of these value for money Starlets. Prices are just 7,995 for the Sol 1.3-litre 16v three door, £8,995 for the Solida three door and £9,530 for the Solida five door.
The rugged Land Cruiser Colorado K2 combines the three door Colorado 3.0-litre turbodiesel model's off-road ability and on-road refinement with unique K2 graphics and styling enhancements.
Just 100 K2 limited edition models will be released at a price of £20,610.
The RAV4 Freesport celebrates Toyota's recent sponsorship of three of the world's most exciting and liberating sports. Appropriately, the RAV4 is also the Official Vehicle of British Mountain Biking through Toyota's sponsorship of the 1998 British Mountain Bike National Championships and Series.
The Freesport is available with a manual or automatic gearbox an can be ordered with or without an electric sunroof. Prices range from £15,299 to £16,625 and three external colours are available, Lucerne Silver, Astral Black and Cool Water (blue).
