COMPARED with Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Sir Henry Segrave Memorial Races at Oulton Park, in Cheshire, were right on my doorstep! - writes Robin Bird.
These are both not to missed events for seeing old cars driven at speed. Oulton, on Saturday, had the added attraction of meeting Miss Wirral Globe Emma Povall, who was there to see the Chrysler hotrod car The Prowler at the Cubbin and North display in the paddock.
Only at Oulton, in June, do the Vintage Sports and Racing bring vintage cars like Bugatti, Bentley, Lagonda, Frazer Nash, Riley and MG to race around the picturesque circuit.
Rain made for some exciting moments, especially at Cascades, where it was very much a case of the Little and Large show with the small three wheeled Moggies of Stewart, Harper and Caroline beating the likes of the massive 24 litre Napier Bentley of Morely or the 27 litre engined Hispano Delage of Baker, aero engined vintage machines.
In the 10 lap Valvemaster race for 1950's sports racers, Ron Gammons in a Devin made a dramatic exit at Cascades on a wet track ending up in the gravel, both driver an car were unhurt.
In the pits, Emma's debut at a race meeting, in mini skirt, was an interest among all those waxed jackets and overall but it was her open umbrella up that earned her a red flag!
Oulton Park's next event is Classic Motorcycle Day on July 11 while the Vintage Sport Club Brigade are at the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb, near Worcester, on July 4, a similar event to the Goodwood hillclimb.
