GED Brannan, Tranmere Rovers' former midfielder who is surplus to requirements at Division Two club Manchester City, will NOT be returning to Prenton Park.

Rovers' manager John Aldridge has decided not to pursue his interest in a player he still rates highly - a decision which amounts to a vote of confidence in his current squad and which has drawn rich praise from Tranmere chairman Mr Frank Corfe.

Mr Corfe told me yesterday: "I am encouraged at the manager's realistic approach. He believes the personal terms (of Brannan) are not right for this club. John is planning a strategy with financial consideration and I am encouraged by that. In view of the number of players floating about, post-Bosman, the manager believes the money could be better spent.

"It is a huge vote of confidence in his playing squad."

Mr Corfe stressed that Brannan, who moved to Maine Road in a £750,000 transfer only 15 months ago and who is one of a number of players being shown the door by City's new manager, Joe Royle, had made no demands over personal terms. "We knew what Ged was on at Manchester City and we have decided not to pursue our interest," said Mr Corfe.

The Tranmere chairman has another reason to be encouraged by Summer events at Prenton Park - season ticket sales for next season are up on 12 months ago. "We are pleased about this - it is another step in the right direction," said Mr Corfe.
