IT was not a good day for the Wirral's North West One League clubs. Caldy and Oldershaw lost and Birkenhead Park were left with a coach bill to pay after the late call off of their clash at Aspull.
Caldy failed 5-16 at Kirby Lonsdale. Their only reward was a late try by Chris Young.
Oldershaw never reached their full potential at Ashton-on- Mersey. A try and conversion by Willy Gardner were not enough in a 7-12 scoreline.
Birkenhead Park were just about to leave for Warrington when the match-off signal came through and they believe the decision should have been made earlier to prevent a lot of unnecessary hassle and expense.
Anselmians suffered an 8-62 mauling at St Edward's in South Lancashire/Cheshire One. Paul Evans gained a try and Jamie Taylor a penalty, but the leaders were altogether too strong.
Wirral saw off Ruskin Park 28-11 with John Morris grabbing two tries. Simon Hignett and Colin Davies also crossed and Hignett added the other points with kicks.
In Division Two, Prenton gained tries by Wilf Lee, Steve Roberts, Craig Elkerton and Mike Penny plus a Penny conversion, but the 22-62 scoreline at Dukinfield did not make happy reading. Paul Millington kicked two penalties and Kevin Mason a third for Shell Stanlow in a 9-19 reverse at Sefton.
In Division Three, Port Sunlight triumphed 8-0 at Collegiate thanks to a try and penalty by John Skarratts, while Simon Robinson managed a brace of penalties for Hoylake, who went under 6-31 to Isle of Man visitors Douglas.
Parkonians beat Deeside 24-15 in a friendly. They were awarded a penalty try and there were also touch downs for Ben Pearson, Graham Eccleson and Peter Hillan. Andy Evans goaled twice.
Wallasey collected a club clash away to a West Park XV after their league encounter with Birchfield was postponed. It finished 17-30 to the St Helens outfit, but Wallasey had touch downs via Phil Turner, Ian Booth and Jim Padgett plus a Ben O'Donnell goal.
Oldershaw have a mountain to climb away to Chester in the semi-final of the Thwaites Cheshire Cup on Sunday. Plate quarter-final clashes include Wirral v Prenton and Anselmians v Helsby.
Birkenhead Park have Stockport as visitors in a club clash, Caldy visit Crewe & Nantwich and Hoylake are at St Mary's. Wallasey, who were due at Oldershaw, may sit the weekend out.
Cheshire Under-21s go to Hartlepool Rovers for their next match in the Under-21 Championship. They also play this evening (Wednesday) against Lancashire at Macclesfield.
