WIRRAL AC celebrated victory in the third race of the Borders Road Running League. Paul Howarth returned to competition after injury with a five second win over second placed athlete Simon Shiels, from Prestatyn, winners of the first two races.
Paul completed the 5.1 mile course at Penyffordd, North Wales, in 25:52 in a race hosted by Buckley Road Runners.
Following Paul home was Tony McDevitt (15th, 27:12 secs). He now heads the M45 category in the series.
Wirral AC took second place and now hold a similar position overall in the league, while Wirral's mixed ladies' and men's veterans team lead their category.
Other counters for Wirral were Andy Brabin (Under-20, 18th, 28:12), Les Coatup (M45, 19th, 28:17), Keith Jones (21st, 28:23), Brian Williams (M45, 31st, 29:13), Eain Robinson (34th, 29:23), Mark Hulmston (38th, 29:39) and James Downey (50th, 29:59).
Wirral AC's ladies' team finished third on the day and have moved up to third place in the league overall. First home for Wirral was Clare Hawkes (L35, 6th, 34:12). Making up the team count were Liz Danson (L40, 13th, 35:35), Katie Malcolm (20th, 37:15) and Lorraine Peerless (21st, 37:15).
Sue Bennett (37:21) followed in 22nd place and maintains her overall lead in the L45 category.
