THE PARTY of the Millennium in Wirral could be over before it has even started. The big party in Hamilton Square on New Year's Eve - similar to the Victory Night celebrations in 1945 - is likely to be called off because of costs and safety concerns over thousands of people packing Hamilton Square.
The Globe highlighted plans for a big party with fireworks and bands. Since our story council officials have had second thoughts.
Tomorrow, Councillors on the policy making committee will be advised that the £25,000 cost of a Millennium party is more likely to be £100,000 because of wages, entertainment and crowd control on New Year's Eve, 1999.
Instead Wirral Council is likely to earmark £100,000 to help residents stage their own parties and celebration events. A Millennium helpline has been set up on 649-9401 by the council for such groups, who are first urged to get a free copy of a Millennium Celebration Toolkit help booklet from libraries and main council buildings.
Council officers will also be talking to churches on how best to celebrate the religious aspect of the Millennium.
