Move to start clock may lead to much more
by Robin Bird
MOVES are afoot to put some 'UDC' pride back in Hoylake, Meols and West Kirby in the wake of the Orange Grove demolition and the Brookfield children's home controversy.
In a timely move, we can exclusively reveal that a local landmark will once again be set ticking in time to welcome the Millennium.
Wirral clock restorers Del Rymer and Bert Tarberner are to restore the town clock above Station Parade with sponsorship from Estates Bolton Ltd and support of the local Chamber of Trade.
Pensioner Bert, from Greasby, who drives an old Morris 1000 saloon, helped Del restore the Birkenhead Market Clock to working order.
Some residents met with Wirral West MP Stephen Hesford on Friday to express their concerns about the decline of Hoylake since it was an urban district council.
Ms Haysha Royko, who campaigned to save the 0range Grove Hotel from demolition, would ideally like a broader-based action committee to help restore civic pride.
"I will work with anyone of any party as long as it benefits the community," she says.
Mr Hesford promised residents he would contact Wirral's chief executive about making Hoylake a conservation area. Kings Gap Court Hotel suggested a jazz festival in Hoylake and John Parr would like to see a lifeboat museum in Hoylake.
