Vauxhall Motors 1 Wakefield & Emley 0

ALVIN McDonald's Vauxhall Motors rounded off another momentous year with a hard-fought victory at Rivacre Park on Saturday against a side they had never previously beaten - a result that leaves the Motormen nicely tucked away in third place in the Unibond League Premier Division, but with several games in hand on the top two clubs.

Revved-up Motors tore into Emley from the start and could have been three up inside the first five minutes, but had to be content with a glorious third-minute goal, which proved to be the winner.

Peter Cumiskey delivered a fantastic cross from the left hand touch-line and there at the far post was top scorer Terry Fearns to power home a terrific header under pressure.

After such a marvellous start, it was perhaps not surprising that the hosts could not maintain that pace and as the game unfolded, the visitors enjoyed more and more possession, but they simply didn't have enough guile to outwit a strong Motors defence, led superbly by Danny Collins.

The Motormen now face a sequence of away matches, starting on Saturday with a league trip to Bradford Park Avenue before next weekend's FA Trophy tie at Conference club, Leigh RMI.
