A JCB driver from Eastham celebrated the New Year with a party after scooping a £9m National Lottery jackpot.
Damien Madden claimed the top prize in the Christmas Lotto draw, but did not check the ticket until a week later. The father-of-three, who is in his 30s, is believed to have moved from Achill Island, County Mayo six years ago.
Mr Madden was unavailable for comment when the Globe called at his home, and neighbours said he has gone away with his family for a while to try and come to terms with the win. But one neighbour, who asked not to be named, said the win was 'wonderful news' and told the Globe: "I love to hear about young people getting some good luck in life and I wish them all the best. It's a great start to the new year."
Another neighbour, Jean Taylor, added: "They're a lovely couple and I'm very pleased for them. He's a hard worker and they've been very good neighbours."
