BIZARRE is a word I would have used to describe Elton John before I heard this two CD compilation, now I would use the term to describe my reaction to it.
I knew I liked a couple of his early '70s songs but I used to think his style had slowly decayed as it became progressively more flamboyant and weird. I was mistaken.
Chronologically following a partnership that spans four decades, this album puts into context all the songs I thought I hated. I even quite liked that tune off of The Lion King.
I still prefer the first CD that covers 1969-1976 but that's only because the ones on the second CD have been so overplayed.
I love Tiny Dancer, which featured recently on the Soundtrack of Cameron Crowe's film Almost Famous. Even better is Bennie and the Jets, which reminds me of Beck - the so-called pop pioneer - almost 30 years later.
The CD also has a lengthy biography of Captain Fantastic and The Dirt Cowboy by Paul Gambaccini, that definitely adds to the package.
