WIRRAL'S Trading Standards chief is warning homeowners to be on their guard following reports of 'cowboy' security companies operating in the area.
These companies, which cannot be named for legal reasons, target elderly householders.
However, Wirral's Assistant Director of Trading Standards, Charles Allen, is warning people to beware of any approaches by such companies.
The company usually 'cold calls' by telephone to homeowners, offering a free security survey. This is followed by a call from a representative or salesperson, who will identify security requirements and give a quote for security products to be installed, often with costs running up to around £1,500 or more.
A discount is often offered as an 'incentive' if the customer signs up there and then and pays a deposit.
However, customers are not advised of cancellation rights, written details of which are required by law in these circumstances. These written details may not always be given.
Although work is done on the properties, it is often ineffective, unnecessary or both. Charles Allen has advised anyone who may be tempted not to fall for cold calling home improvement or security checks from unknown businesses.
Trading Standards has issued advice to anyone who thinks they have a problem:
lHave an independent company assess your security requirements and propose the best type of system.
lAlways get more than one estimate.
lNever sign up there and then to take advantage of a 'reduced' rate.
lUse companies who are well established with fixed premises and willing to identify work they have done locally.
lSeek an insurance-backed guarantee, where possible.Anyone with concerns is asked to contact the Consumer Advice Action Desk on 666-5288.
