COUNCIL cuts have blown up into another row over Wirral's education services.
Staff from Wirral's Learning Support Service have slammed authority plans to half their staff numbers.
Members of the team - who help children with learning difficulties in mainstream schools -lobbied the council's education committee this week saying that they felt victimised by the proposed £200,000 cuts to their service.
The cuts are part of a package of savings proposed by the council's Labour group to avert a huge rise in council tax.
After hearing the pleas of the staff, the committee passed a resolution that will defer the cuts for a year while consultations can be carried out - but the council cabinet may still force through the cuts if they wish.
Stuart Kelly, leader of the Liberal Democrat group, said: "The council shouldn't cut any aspect of the budget that provides help for the borough's children with special needs."
Cllr Jeff Green, chair of the committee, said: "We hope that the cabinet listens to what we have to say and act to protect the future of these children."
