AMERICAN boxing legend Carmen Basilio is to be guest of honour at a special London versus Merseyside boxing competition organised by former world welterweight champion John H. Stracey.
The night will feature eight bouts in different weight categories between boxers from London's world famous Repton Boxing Club and boxers from clubs around Merseyside.
John H. Stracey, who now lives in Wallasey, began his boxing career with Repton ABC and is keen to rekindle the tradition of North v South fight nights.
He said: "The history of North versus South rivalry dates back about 30 years, but for some reason there haven't been any matches in the past five years. I've been involved in organising matches since I retired and I was keen to start up the tradition again.
"I've been planning the event for months - it will be a great night for boxing fans and it will also be a chance to meet one of the top American boxers of all time."
Carmen Basilio is a former welterweight and middleweight champion of the world and is also credited with having started the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York.
Basilio had a ring record of 56 wins, 16 losses and seven draws, with 27 wins by knockout.
Richie King, who is organising the match-ups for the evening, said: "North versus South matches used to take place on an annual basis either in London or Liverpool. Over the years there have been some fantastic tournaments and it will be great to see them start up again."
The evening will feature a four-course meal, a comedian and a chance to meet Carmen Bassilio.
It takes place at the Olympia, Liverpool, on Wednesday, November 3 (6.30pm). Tickets cost £45 or £400 for a table of 10. Tickets for boxing only spectators cost £15. To order phone 263-6633 or for more information phone John H. Stracey on 07960 234 911.
