CAMPAIGNERS fighting against the reopening of two Wirral nightclubs - closed last year following complaints of violence and disorder- have blasted a decision that will allow one to reopen while the other stays shut.
Luton-based Luminar Leisure, the leaseholder of the Ritzy and Fifth Avenue complexes on Bromborough retail park, was seeking the renewal of both clubs' public entertainment licences at a meeting of Wirral council's licensing committee last week.
Councillors refused the renewal of the Ritzy's licence but granted one to Fifth Avenue on condition that the owners 'undertake to put in measures to minimise the impact on the neighbourhood of any possible nuisance, antisocial behaviour and crime.'
Liberal Democrat councillor Steve Niblock has been campaigning on behalf of Bromborough people who claimed they were plagued by disorder while the clubs were open.
He said: "Clearly the crime and disorder came from the two nightclubs. How can you say the person walking down the road came from this club and not the other? I think it's an odd decision.
"How can you guarantee 500 people will disperse home without causing damage or disturbing people? I can't see how that will happen."
He is to contact the council's lawyers over steps residents could take to stop the club becoming a nuisance again.
