Houlihan's Birkenhead Sunday League round-up with Grahame Sutherland

A LATE winner by Jamie Holmes enabled Houlihan's Birkenhead Sunday Football League team AFC Bromborough to put the previous week's National Sunday Cup exit behind them.

Jamie's goal came in the final minute of the Wirral District FA Sunday Premier Cup second round tie against arch rivals Archers Social.

Alan Mort netted AFC Bromborough's first goal in a 2-1 success.

Result of the day in the same competition belonged to mighty Dock, who triumphed 6-0 at Castrol Tessuti, Mike Saunders, 2, Gary Reay, 2, Mike McGraa (penalty) and J.P. Stanhope scoring the goals in a memorable victory.

In a delayed Houlihan's Challenge Cup first round tie, Division Two club Horse & Jockey added to Rock Ferry Social's dismal season with a 3-1 victory. Gary Bateman scored Rock Ferry's consolation goal.

There was a glut of goals in the President's Cup first round ties. The clash between Royal Sun Alliance and Parkside went into extra-time before goals from Carl Cook, 2, Nick Kinsella, Ian Bonner and Andy Wooding sealed a 5-4 passage for Royal Sun.

K-Seal Glass (Chris Lee, 2, Garth Owen and Dave Williams) fired four goals past Bidston Hotel - but conceded eight to send the North End boys through.

Woodchurch's prolific marksman, Phil Hudson, scored a great hat-trick in a 5-1 win over Prenton AFC. Darren Eaton and Dave Cumman netted the others.

In Premier Division action, FC Prenton missed an opportunity to close the gap on leaders Dock. They fell to a shock 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Shaftesbury 02.

But Brow FC (Owen Hassle, 2, Saun Keevy and Mike McGhee) moved into third spot with a 4-0 win against Shaftesbury 1886.

In Division Four, St Mary's Cricket Club celebrated their first league win of the season, defeating Swinging Arm 2-0. Steve McGinity netted the first goal and his 47-year-old dad, who came on as a sub, grabbed the second. Well done, lads!
