Saturday proved to be a very successful day for Caldy with wins for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams is their respective leagues together with a very good win earlier in the day for Caldy U15's against a visiting team from Ireland. This was not the end of their success as both U9's and U10's were losing finalist in a big tournament organised by Sale Sharks on Sunday with the Junior Colts chalking up their 8th League win of the year and remain top and unbeaten.
Some weeks an expansive passing game makes Caldy XV an irresistible team to watch. Some weeks plan (b) required to grind out a result and keep the show on the road. Saturday was one of the later games where the result was more important than the spectacle. With Stockport loosing to Fleetwood this gave Winnington Park the opportunity to go top of the league with 12 points and Caldy are now level with Penrith and Stockport on 10 points. It is the mid table clubs that are pitching into the mix with not just the good win for Fleetwood but also a good turn over for Oldham away to Aspatria. These results demonstrate yet again the North 2 West is a fiercely competitive this league and no doubt there will be many more twists and turns in this story before the end of the season.
St Munchin's College, Limerick, is a very highly rated side but in a physical confrontation the home under 15's side came back from being 7 points down to secure a fine victory 14 - 7 with tries from Martin Woods and Jack Maginn. Both tries where ably converted by Andrew Tinsley. With a strong whiff of the burgeoning testosterone in the air, Liverpool Society referee, David Sixsmith used all of his experience to keep 30 players on the field of play. Sunday proved to be just as successful for Caldy who took part in a tournament for U9 & U10's teams organised through Sale Sharks and played at Manchester Rugby Club. Clubs from across Lancashire and Cheshire flocked to the event that started at 10.00 a.m. and finished just before the kick-off for the Sale European Challenge Cup match against Catania at 3.00 p.m. Both Caldy teams did themselves and the club great credit by reaching the finals. Unfortunately, both teams fell at the final hurdle but doubtless this experience will galvanise the squads and prove valuable in future times.
