Houlihan's Birkenhead Sunday League report by Grahame Sutherland
GOALS by Ian Brunt and Mike McGraa enabled Dock FC to stay in top spot as they proved too strong for Archers Social in the only game played in the Houlihan's Birkenhead Sunday Football League Premier Division.
But FC Prenton kept up the pressure on the leaders with a 4-0 win at Beehive with goals by young Iggy McGraa, 2, Gareth McVoy and a 35-yard screamer from the evergreen Neil Young.
In Division One, Eddie Hutchenson scored a superb four goals for Nova as they demolished Hornby/Trafalgar 6-2. Gary Carrington added two more as Nova moved into fourth place to leave Hornby rooted at the bottom of the table.
Stirrup Sports and Social Club, though, are the new leaders, following a 5-3 win at Rangers Breaks. Goals from Jamie Burke, 2, Tim Burke, Lee Wharton and Kevin Upton ensured all three points.
Despite dominating their Cheshire FA Sunday Cup tie against The Plough for long periods, Houlihan's Variety Club missed a bagful of chances before their Wallasey Sunday League opponents hit back on the break to score four goals without reply in spectacular style.
But in the Wirral FA Sunday Amateur Cup, Woodside Hotel are proving they are the team to beat. Matty O'Shea, Liam Stewart, Tim Bigland and Liam Atherton grabbed the goals in a 4-0 win over Sutton Villa.
Young Lions also progressed to the next round thanks to goals from brothers Lee Parry, 2, Craig Parry, Graham Tub, Dave Evans and Jay Gibbons in a 6-2 success at KingCabs.
In Division Two, Oxton Athletic's Stewart Watterson, 2, and Simon Tierney put their names on the scoresheet in a 3-0 triumph over Prenton that closes the gap on league leaders Woodside.
Wayne Geddes, with two goals, Chris Jackson, Paul Nolan and Andy Neal eased FC Vaults' relegation worries by finding the net in a 5-0 victory over K-Seal Glass.
