Wirral rugby round-up with Andrew Stratton

THE winning run of Anselmians continued with their latest success coming against Orrell Anvils in the third round of the Powergen Vase.

It was never easy on a difficult wet day at Malone Field, but Anselmians scored the only try through Simon Kearney and a conversion and two penalties by Murray King ensured a 13-3 result to extend their purple start to the season.

With seven minutes to go, King had to leave the pitch with a facial injury and he must be doubtful for this Saturday's game against Ormskirk.

Wallasey went through 15-0 at the expense of Windermere. Ben O'Donnell and Paul Hayes crossed and Dave Hall added one conversion and a penalty.

Oldershaw were shocked by Sefton and fell 5-8. Paul Morton gained a touch down for Shaw, but a penalty proved decisive for the Liverpool outfit.

Wirral went through to the next stage of the Thwaites Cheshire Cup the easy way with Ellesmere Port crying off their third round clash.

Hoylake ended the winning run of Sale Amateurs with an impressive seven try tally for a 47-10 scoreline. Skipper Richard Young and Rob Kurton each went in twice. There were singles for Paul Ashcroft, James Morris and Ben Flint.

Simon Robinson had his kicking boots on with six of the conversions.

There was disappointment for Parkonians as a late try and conversion saw them lose 28-35 at home to Marple. Terry Williams, Craig Fowler, Riaz Hashin and Tony Burton touched down and Paul Topping landed a conversion and a brace of penalties.

It was better for Prenton who played on Sunday and enjoyed a 32-12 victory over Northwich. Gareth Knapman led the way with a brace of tries.

Carl Salisbury, Mark Astbury and Lee Gordon also breached the visiting rearguard and Astbury managed a couple of conversions and one penalty.

It's back to league action on Saturday. In South Lancashire/Cheshire One, Hoylake go to Rochdale with Wirral entertaining Sandbach.

Anselmians put their unbeaten record on the line at Ormskirk in Division Two. Oldershaw journey to Orrell Anvils and Wallasey face a home derby against Ellesmere Port.

Prenton are due at Sefton in Division Three and in Division Four it's Port Sunlight v West Park Warriors, with Parkonians not having a game because Runcorn are presently suspended from action.
