A WORKING mother from Woodchurch says she may have to quit her job when the after-school club her daughter attends closes.

This is the second blow for 27-year-old Kathleen Alexander since she started working two years ago for a record store in Birkenhead.

Once her daughter Simone, aged six, started Fender Primary School in Woodchurch, Miss Alexander returned to part-time employment working between 28 and 39 hours per week.

But she has since had to reduce the number of hours she works as the breakfast club run by Ganneys Meadow Early Years Centre from 8.15am to 9am each day was discontinued.

She has now received a letter from the primary school stating that the after-school club will also be shutting with effect from Friday November 19. Miss Alexander fears she will now have to give up her job to collect Simone.

She said: "The facilities provided by the school enabled me to return to work which is something the government has been encouraging mothers to do.

""My partner, Paul, has now had to half the hours he works to 19-per-week to be able to pick her up.

"But it means our income has dropped considerably and we don't know what we will do during the school holidays when there used to be a holiday club."

A Wirral council spokesman said: "The club at Ganneys Meadow will be closing on November 19 as it has not been sustainable.

"However, head teachers in the area are meeting shortly and are working hard to find alternative provision in the district."
