2,000 new homes, hotels, and “a major new cultural attraction” could be built on the Wirral waterfront facing Liverpool. The new plans are set to be approved later this week.
On December 4, councillors are being asked to approve two masterplans for the area around the Woodside ferry terminal and Hamilton Square as well as the area around Wallasey town hall on the banks of the Mersey. It follows a number of plans for other areas that were approved earlier this year in July.
Both plans have been through multiple rounds of public feedback and development and will help support Wirral Council’s draft Local Plan, an ambitious policy that seeks to build thousands of homes by 2040. It will also be a guide for anyone wanting to develop in the areas covered by the plans.
The local authority’s vision for the waterfront could see the delivery of 1,700 new homes, two or more new hotels, workspaces, restaurants, and leisure facilities. Two new multi-storey car parks would be built to support this as well as “a major new cultural attraction,” public spaces, cycle lanes, and improved connections to Birkenhead town centre.
Wirral Council said the plan was underpinned by a £23m investment into the area through the Levelling Up and Town Deal Funds. Funding given to the council by the government will go towards a new U-boat museum, a new public park outside the Ferry terminal, as well as major changes to the streets in and around Hamilton Square.
The area around Wallasey Town Hall is also set for redevelopment supported by £2.3m of funding to prepare the land where its former annexes stood for new homes. The plans said it has the potential to deliver 368 new homes, a new Riverside school, and expanded Guinea Gap leisure centre.
A series of three, four and six storey developments could be built around the town hall. An extra care development has also been put forward on what is currently the Brighton Street car park.
However, the council still has work to do on a number of plans including West Kirby, Birkenhead town centre, and Wirral Waters. The plan for West Kirby is due to be published this winter with a report presented to councillors before June next year though it will not include any requirement for new housing.
