WEST Kirby Grammar School shared their “honour” after opening a climbing wall in memory of schoolgirl Jessica Baker.
On Friday, September 29, 2023, a coach carrying pupils from West Kirby and Calday Grange Grammar Schools overturned on the northbound M53 near to junction five at Hooton.
15-year-old Jessica Baker and the coach driver, 40-year-old, Stephen Shrimpton were tragically killed as a result.
Following the incident, Jessica’s school, West Kirby Grammar School launched a GoFundMe to raise £30,000 to allow them to "convert part of their existing quad into a vibrant climbing wall area in the hope of bringing joy to many for years to come".
The project included the installation of a 20ft climbing wall, the replacement of the existing paving with a rubberised surface, extending the gating and fencing around the area and the design and mounting of a memorial plaque.
On Saturday, November 16, the school invited people to join them in opening the climbing wall.
A spokesperson for West Kirby Grammar School said: “We were honoured to open Jess’ climbing wall on Saturday.
“Jess’ friends and family, WKGS students and staff climbed all day to celebrate the opening and remember Jess.
“A beautiful mural, painted by Liverpool Artist Paul Curtis, was also unveiled.
“We were delighted to be able to present ‘Climbers against cancer’ with a donation from our fundraising efforts.
“The day was filled with happy memories of Jess, along with laughter, fun and positivity.
“A lasting, fitting tribute to Jess that will have an impact on our community for years to come.”
All proceeds from the event will support the completion of a mural in her memory and contribute to her family’s chosen charity, Climbers Against Cancer.
A fundraising page was set up to mark the opening with more than £700 raised in Jessica’s memory. To donate click here: https://gofund.me/aa324509.
