POLICE have issued an update after a bus fire and fuel spill caused a closure on the M53.

At around 5.20pm last night (Tuesday, November 19) emergency services were called to reports of a fire on the M53 northbound between junctions nine at Ellesmere Port and ten at Cheshire Oaks.

Cheshire Police and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were in attendance.

National Highways Traffic Officers were also in attendance assisting with traffic management.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix said: "M53 Northbound blocked, stationary traffic due to bus fire and spillage from J10 A5117 (Little Stanney) to J9 A5032 Station Road (Ellesmere Port). Congestion to J11 (M56 interchange)."

Following the incident Cheshire Police told the Globe that the lanes reopened at 8pm.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “At 5.20pm on Tuesday 19 November emergency services were called to reports of a vehicle fire on the M53 northbound near to junction 9.

“Highways attended the scene, and the road was temporarily closed while firefighters dealt with the incident.

“There were no reports of any injuries. Two lanes reopened at 8pm.”
