TRIBUTES have been paid to a Labour peer who served as Cheshire West's MEP for ten years.
Lyndon Harrison, who has died aged 77, was a Labour Party local councillor from 1981 to 1990, serving on Cheshire County Council before becoming MEP for the Cheshire West constituency, which included Wirral, from 1989-1999.
He was created a life peer in1999, taking the title Baron Harrison, of Chester in the County of Cheshire and spoke regularly in the House of Lords until his retirement in July 2022.
Lord Harrison was a well-known Humanist and a member of the All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group.
Paying tribute, Andrew Copson, Chief Executive of Humanists UK and the President of Humanists International, said: "I worked with Lyndon for 20 years and he was always a warm and incisive colleague.
"He leaves behind a huge legacy of principled advocacy for humanism and the fair representation of non-religious voices in the UK. At Humanists UK we will all miss him very much and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends and the many who loved him."
Lord Harrison is survived by his wife, Hilary Anne Plank, and children, Adam Harrison and Sara Harrison.
His funeral is at Chester Crematorium on November 22 at 10.40am.
