WIRRAL school students have been working to help reopen a local library.

40 students from The Mosslands School in Wallasey have spent the week at Wallasey Village Library and Community Centre, as work continues to re-open the library.

With supervision from the school librarian and library trustees, students have helped to prepare 3,500 books ready for lending, from the library's current stock of around 6,000 books.

Sue Simpson, a trustee at Wallasey Village Library and Community Centre, said: "We are very grateful for the work of the students and we are delighted with the progress they have made.

"Preparing and cataloguing our supply of books is the final stage before we can start lending books again and the work of the students this week has been a massive boost."

Wallasey Village Library was closed by the Council in October 2022 and, in the years since, volunteers have worked to transfer the building to the local community, including a community space and partnering with Baked to provide an on site cafe which opened last month.

Head of The Mosslands School, Adrian Whiteley, said: "At Mosslands, we have prioritised reading in the School for a number of years, which is why we have become a phone free school.

"It is genuinely heart-warming to see our wonderful students making such a contribution to the community.  Libraries are a resource that should be celebrated and it has been upsetting to see the decline of these facilities across the borough, especially when so many homes are without books.

"Hopefully we can continue this relationship with our community library so we can ensure that future generations have access to this wonderful resource."
