A BIN lorry caught fire in Wallasey this morning (Friday, November 8).

At around 10am Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service were called to Kings Road in Liscard after the contents of a bin wagon caught fire.

Wirral Council confirmed that the contents of the bin lorry had been tipped onto Kingswood Road in Wallasey for safety reasons and that there would be delays to collections.

A Wirral Council spokesperson said: “There will be delays to bin collections in the Liscard, Wallasey area today (Fri 8 Nov) due to the contents of the bin wagon catching fire.

“For safety reasons, the contents of the bin lorry have been tipped onto Kingswood Road, Wallasey. This will be removed later today.

“If you are a resident affected and your bin has not been emptied today, your bin will be collected on Saturday (9 Nov). Please have your bin out for collection by 7am.

“Thank you to Merseyside Fire and Rescue service who attended to douse down the fire.”

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended an incident on Kings Road, Liscard on the morning of Friday 8th November.

"Crews were alerted at 09.58 and on scene at 10.06, with two fire engines attending.

"Firefighters responded to reports of a smell of smoke in a bin lorry. Crews monitored temperatures of the vehicle and used on hose reel jet.

"The driver of the vehicle emptied the lorry, while Fire Service personnel used one hose reel jet to damp down and turn over its contents. Two firefighters in breathing apparatus (BA) were standing by as a precaution.

"Crews continued to turn over the contents and monitor temperatures, before a handover was completed with the collection supervisor.

"A clean up team was arranged by on site staff, and crews left the scene at 11.11."
