SUPERMARKET giant Lidl is hoping to be able to sell alcohol at a new store in Moreton until 11pm at night.

The new store is part of a major development Wirral Council has been progressing for several years in the town.

The project, off Pasture Road, is a key development the authority has been looking to get off the ground in order to provide more homes across the borough and bring investment into the town centre.

A planning application for the scheme outlined proposals for 45 new homes, 80 affordable extra care apartments for the elderly, an outdoor area, as well as improvements to Moreton Library to make room for outdoor activities and a summer house.

A new Lidl is also planned as part of the scheme which was originally due to open in 2024 but work on that part of the site is still due to start.

Urban Regen Ltd also applied for planning permission earlier this year to demolish a former family centre on the centre which will become the new 80 extra care apartments.

Overall planning permission for the scheme was granted in 2023 with councillors praising the scheme for its comprehensive plan, proactive engagement with the local community, and social benefits to the area. Only two people objected to the scheme after 14,000 residents were asked for their views on the plans.

At the time, councillor Kathy Hodson praised the application as it would provide a more affordable place for people to shop in the town, adding: "You want people to be able to live, work, shop and play in the same area and not have to get the bus or drive and I think this ticks all the boxes."

A new application for a premises licence by Lidl offers a glimpse at what times the Lidl could be open to the public. Lidl have applied for permission to sell alcohol to be drunk off site between 7am and 11pm Monday to Sunday though the application does not outline what times the Lidl will be open.

The notice said that anyone with an objection should write to Wirral Council no later than November 19. Lidl were approached for a further update on the scheme.
