CELEBRATIONS are in full swing for a Wirral care home resident who is 105 today (Thursday, October 31).

In addition to receiving a special telegram from the King and Queen, Winifred McGiveron is marking the occasion with other residents at Summer Fields Care Home in Rock Ferry, where she lives.

Relatives say she has received cards from around the world and local schools to mark the occasion, in what has been described as 'a wonderful act of kindness organised by the care home'.

Born and educated in Liverpool, Winnie moved to Greasby with husband Trevor and their three children in the 1960s, where she worked in what is now the Twelfth Man pub in Greasby and local charity shops.

She later moved to Pensby and, after losing her husband, spent some time living in Australia where both of her daughters live.

Upon returning to the UK, Winnie moved to Heswall where she lived independently until her health deteriorated at the age of 99 and she joined the community at SummerField care home.

Winnie was part of numerous walking groups and was part of many different rambling trips until her late 80s.

Hilbre Island was described as one of her favourite excursions. Until recently, she was also a keen reader and always enjoyed visiting her local library. Nowadays, she enjoys a cup of tea with biscuits while listening to the radio.

Winnie's son John McGiveron said: "We would like to take this opportunity as a family to highlight the outstanding care and kindness that she receives daily from the care home.

"The staff go above and beyond every day and we are so grateful. Care workers don't often get the credit that they deserve and today we feel is important to highlight the wonderful work that they do.

"This is the second royal telegram mum has received, the first being from Queen Elizabeth II on her 100th birthday. She has lived through an impressive three monarchs."

A very happy birthday Winnie, from all at the Globe 🎉🎂.
