MOWGLI Street Food has raised £2 million for charity on its 10th anniversary.
Nisha Katona, founder and CEO of Mowgli Street Food, and The Mowgli Trust, announced that £2 million had been raised through the efforts of The Mowgli Trust.
Since opening its doors on Bold Street in Liverpool in 2014, Mowgli Street Food has supported a variety of charitable initiatives, with a focus on children’s health charities, cancer charities, hospitals, education, conservation and sustainability.
Exactly a decade later, Mowgli has 24 restaurants alongside the charitable arm, The Mowgli Trust. The work of the Mowgli Trust reflects Mowgli Street Food's aim to produce a workforce that feels "nourished, purposeful and fulfilled in their work". This is achieved by each restaurant having a house charity and a dedicated Charity Champion.
Nisha Katona MBE, Founder and CEO of Mowgli Street Food, said: "I built Mowgli with all my savings and no business knowledge.
“Building a business and a workforce of now almost 1000 people on the charitable principle of enriching lives in the cities we go to has worked on every level.
“Our teams feel they walk taller by working in a job that directly benefits lives in their own communities and around the world.
“We send our teams to visit the two girls schools we are developing in India and our conservation projects in Africa.
“We sponsor a child in need for each of our full time employees. At such a difficult time, giving a noble sense of purpose at work through fundraising means we recruit easily and keep our staff.
“People want to love the place they work. They want to feel physically, emotionally and spiritually nourished in their nine-to-five.
“Having a dedicated charity in each restaurant means that the £2 million raised becomes the team’s badge of honour and I am so proud of them.
“10 years to the day we hit this immense £2 million milestone. This is a demonstration to anyone out there who is thinking of starting a business, that by creating around charitable heart, they can not only create a happy place to work and great economic growth but actually make the world a better place- If I can do it so can you, so I say, pick up your hammers and get building.”
The £2 million was raised through a combination of restaurant events and charitable initiatives for the Mowgli team, restaurant events and contributions from customers.
Mowgli Street Food continues to work closely with selected partner charities throughout the UK and Internationally.
The international projects include rebuilding girls schools in Varanasi, India, promoting education and holistic development in Kigali, Rwanda, and advancing animal conservation through partnership with Chester Zoo.
