A 29-year-old man from Wirral has been arrested following a 'racially aggravated' assault in Liverpool city centre.

Merseyside Police said that at around 10pm on Wednesday, June 26, a man in his 30s was walking along Slater Street in the city centre with a friend when he was approached by a group of men

The men shouted a racial slur at the man before punching, kicking and hitting him with a glass bottle. The victim suffered an injury to his ear.

They then launched several glass bottles at the man and his friend before leaving the scene.

An investigation is underway and extensive witness and CCTV enquiries have been carried out.

The force confirmed they have arrested a 29-year-old Wirral man on suspicion of racially/religiously aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He has been bailed pending further enquiries following the incident.

Police have issued CCTV images of four people they want to speak to following a racially aggravated assault in Liverpool city centre.

Detective Inspector Jay Halpin said: "This was an unprovoked attack on a man who was minding his own business walking down the street with a friend.

"Hate crime will never be tolerated on Merseyside, and we understand the distress and upset that being targeted in this way causes.

"We are keen to speak to the men pictured as we believe they could assist with our enquiries."
