A woman has been arrested following a suspected stabbing inside a flat in New Ferry this morning (Tuesday, October 22).

Merseyside Police confirmed that at around 10.30am, officers received a report of a disturbance at a home on Portbury Close and emergency services attended the scene.

A man in his 40s was found with a single stab wound to his chest and he has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A 41-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding with intent. She has also been taken to hospital for treatment to a facial injury.

Neighbours spoke of the shock at what happened.

One, who had been working nearby at the time the incident took place told the Globe: "I didn't know what was going on at first. It was quiet, then police and ambulance vehicles turn up.

"There was a woman sitting by a nearby tree and being helped by ambulance staff. She had cuts on her face and looked like she was in distress."

He added: "I don't know exactly what's happened, but I hope the man taken to hospital is alright." 

Detective Inspector Peter Rexwinkel said: “We are in the very early stages of the investigation and officers remain in the area to establish the circumstances of the incident.

“If you live in the area and saw or heard anything suspicious this morning, please come forward with your information.

Even if it seems insignificant, please let us know because it could prove vital to our enquiries.”
