WELCOME to Behind the Lens, a feature that shines a light on the talented photographers in our Wirral Globe Camera Club group.

This week, we’re looking at Trevor Litherland’s favourite photographs and hearing about his passion for photography.

Trevor, who was born in Liverpool but lives in Noctorum, has been taking photos for decades, since the early 1960s.

When and why did you take up photography?

I took up photography in the early 1960s when I was given a Lubitel 2 twin lens reflex camera. It used 120 film that I used to develop and print myself. From there, I moved onto various 35mm cameras, however the advent of digital photography was game changing. No more loading film into tanks in the dark, mixing chemicals, finding room for a darkroom and printing - with many a failure!

What do you love about taking pictures?

When I go out to take photographs, I love the peacefulness of being in the zone, to be focussing on my photography and looking at evolving compositions. Sometimes I have to wait for all the elements in the scene to cohere. Then processing the images to see if my previsualisation of an image came to fruition is fascinating.

Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why?

Living in Wirral gives many beautiful opportunities for photography. There is a wealth of coastal scenes that are ever-changing with the seasons and the times of day. I don't suppose I have an exact favourite place as I think most coastal places can return good photographs.

What is your favourite subject matter and why?

Although I enjoy several different genres of photography through urban, macro, flower and landscape to name a few, coastal photography and seascapes around dawn or dusk are my favourite. At those times of the day, the colours are enhanced and more impactful.

If you could photograph anyone/any place/anything, who/what would it be?

This is a very difficult question to answer. I don't think there are enough hours, days or years to photograph everything I’d like to. However, like Garry Winogrand, I believe all things are photographable so I'm content with that.
