WIRRAL Met College have issued an “urgent notice” following an ongoing situation which closed one of its campuses.
On Wednesday (October 16) emergency services attended Marion Street in Birkenhead at around 5.45am.
On arrival, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service crews found smoke billowing from an industrial unit and found a container producing smoke and heat. Witnesses also described a “strong chemical smell” coming from the blaze.
Six fire engines worked to extinguish the fire which measured 50m by 30m.
Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service were also at the scene.
The incident caused the closure of the nearby Conway Park campus of Wirral Met College with students evacuated.
Following the incident, Wirral Met College issued an update to staff and students on Facebook this afternoon (Thursday, October 17).
The statement read: “URGENT NOTICE. Due to the ongoing situation near Conway Park, the campus will remain closed tomorrow, 18th October.
“We are currently making arrangements for some classes to be held at an alternative campus or delivered online.
“Students will be informed about the location of their classes via Microsoft Teams. Please continue to check Teams messages throughout the afternoon.
“We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
“Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”
