WIRRAL Council has put out new images which could see a historic square, a waterfront with “one of the best views in the world” and a high street undergo some major changes.

The local authority is asking for opinions again on its latest plans for Woodside, Hamilton Square and Argyle Street.

The new plans could see new trees, cycle routes, improved paving, a new plaza and event space, as well as a waterfront children’s play area. Wirral Council said the plans would make the area better connected and create a “feel-good factor.”

A nearly £1m contract was approved earlier in the year to move the scheme forward with £21m expected to be spent on improving the area. The money comes from government grant funding, some of which needs to be spent by March 2025.

Businesses and new tenants in the area said there was a sense of excitement things were about to change.

Wirral Council said these plans were “to establish a dynamic Creative Quarter, defined by a thriving community of ambitious independent businesses. The area will see a vastly improved street scene and upgraded public realm, new planting, upgraded bus facilities and dedicated infrastructure for walking, wheeling and cycling.”

The local authority said the plans were about “making Birkenhead a more attractive and welcoming space for visitors and residents alike, contributing to re-establishing Birkenhead as a destination.”

Despite the changes, some things will stay the same with historic tram tracks in the area kept. These link up to the Transport Museum which is set to see a major revamp and double in size.

Big Heritage CIC which has taken the transport museum over is also behind the project to deliver a new Battle of the Atlantic Museum on the waterfront. The ferry terminal in Woodside is also currently undergoing an upgrade.

The waterfront revamp will form part of Wirral Council’s regeneration plans for Woodside that looks to create “one of the best development sites on the Wirral, if not Merseyside,” adding: “This is Brooklyn to the New York skyline – the great place to live with an amazing view, but so much more.”

The local authority previously said: “With Liverpool’s growth and busy skyline, Birkenhead could be seen as the poor relation, but the change in density and the access to great public hard wired infrastructure of the grid iron plan, underground railway, road tunnels, gentle density and public parks is a key asset for a different offer to its neighbour.”
