A WIRRAL school is to become home to what has been described as 'an exciting new music initiative'.

Edsential’s Big Band Academy - which will be based at West Kirby Grammar School - aims to provide, what its founders call 'an incredible opportunity for young woodwind, brass, and percussion players to advance their musical journey'.

The programme is designed for secondary school students who not only want to develop their skills in 'a fun and engaging environment' but are keen to see how their love for music can grow into something more.

The Big Band Academy will offer students the chance to:

  • Play and perform jazz and swing music, honing their skills alongside other talented young musicians
  • Understand how different sections of a big band come together to create performances
  • Develop confidence through ensemble playing and experience the joy of collaborative music-making

The Academy's head, Becky Thomas, is described as 'an accomplished conductor and music teacher, will lead the ensemble'.

A statement from the founders read: "As co-founder of the highly respected Out of the Blue Jazz Orchestra, Becky brings extensive experience working with some of the North West’s top musicians.
