A ‘RARE’ 50p coin marking the coronation of King Charles III is being sold on eBay for £500.
The coin, which has been listed by a seller in Ellesmere Port, was first minted in August last year following the coronation in May and a total of just 5 million were produced.
It was the second set of coins to feature the King’s head, the first coming in December 2022, and includes an image of Westminster Abbey and the King’s insignia beneath a crown on the reverse side.
In the description, the seller says: “This rare 50p coin of King Charles III, featuring his coronation design, is a must-have for any serious coin collector. Minted in the United Kingdom and with a year of issue of 2023, this coin is a perfect addition to your collection.
“The coin's fineness is unknown, but its rarity and unique design make it a valuable addition to your collection. This coin is a great representation of the British monarchy and its rich history. It is a perfect gift for any coin enthusiast or anyone who appreciates the beauty of rare coins. Don't miss the opportunity to add this coveted coin to your collection.”
The Royal Mint said at the time of the announcement that the coins would be popular with those keen to own a piece of British history.
There are thought to be around 27 billion coins currently in circulation in the UK, meaning this rare example makes up less than 2 percent of that total.
The coronation coin appears in other listing for prices up to £2,500.
The listing is available to view on eBay.
