A CANADIAN folk singer will play Birkenhead's Indigo venue this week.

Vancouver-based artist Madelyn Read, whose music seamlessly blends urban sensibilities with the rustic charm of folk/Americana plays Indigo on Thursday, October 10.

Read’s unique sound has captivated audiences with its deep roots in rural storytelling, a passion that has been a cornerstone of her music despite her urban upbringing.

Her journey took a significant turn in 2019 when she collaborated with Louise Burns of Lillix. This partnership led to the creation of her track How Easy, which Burns produced at 604 Studios in Vancouver.

Read’s new record, Concrete Country, represents a modern take on Canadiana, exploring what it means to navigate life in a North American city in the 21st century. This new collection of songs is poignant and evokes the sensation of a solitary train ride through the prairies that ends in the vibrant energy of a downtown core. Concrete Country is a heartfelt tribute to home, resonating with both love and frustration, and has captivated fans of folk music everywhere.

Joining Read on this tour is the talented Madeleine Elkins, a versatile guitarist, singer, and banjoist renowned for her dynamic range across the genres of folk, jazz, indie, and more. While adding classic folk vocal harmonies, Elkins skilfully crafts riffs that weave together gritty slide guitar solos with crisp bluegrass licks, adding rich textures to the music. Elkin's presence brings a depth and vibrancy that perfectly complements Read’s unique coastal Canadiana sound.
