WIRRAL Poetry Festival returns this week with 17 events for people to enjoy.

Starting today (Thursday, October 3), on National Poetry Day, and running until Sunday (October 6) the festival aims to promote the creation and appreciation of poetry and the spoken word in Wirral and beyond.

As well as contemporary poets, the festival will feature performances by community-based poetry groups from across Merseyside, lectures, walks and activities for children.

Councillor Ann Ainsworth, Vice Chair of Wirral’s Tourism, Communities, Culture & Leisure Committee, said: “Although some people might think poetry can be a bit exclusive or not for them, the organisers of Wirral Poetry Festival have worked hard to make it as inclusive as possible, with lots of free performances, engaging activities and audience participation.

“I’m confident that seasoned poetry lovers and first-timers alike will enjoy the fantastic quality and range of poetry on offer and hopefully be inspired to write some of their own!”

Port Sunlight will provide the setting for most of the programme, with multiple venues across the historic village taking part.

Originally part of the Wirral Festival of Firsts since its inception in 2011, the poetry festival has evolved into a stand-alone event to provide a sharper focus on poetry. Funding to support this year’s festival has been provided through the Borough of Culture 2024 programme.
