A WIRRAL couple are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary today (Thursday, October 3).
Frank and Sheila Brereton tied the knot at St Peter and Paul’s Church in New Brighton on October 3, 1964.
They went on to have four sons. The family has now expanded to include eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The couple, who are both 82, met as teenagers in 1956 and spent a lot of their time at New Brighton baths.
Frank went on to be a radio officer in the Danish merchant navy. He was also in both the British and Swedish Merchant Navy and a New Brighton lifeboatman for 40 years, later becoming a helmsman.
Sheila’s family ran Sherwood guest house on Wellington Road in New Brighton from the early 1950s. Frank and Sheila took over its running in the 1990s after the death of Sheila's mother.
They are now enjoying their retirement at Mariners Park in New Brighton.
Looking back on 60 years of married life, Frank, told the Globe: "We've had a good marriage, there's not really a secret to a long and happy one.
"We've had a varied and busy life and kept reasonably healthy."
Mr Brereton continued: "We still have our rows, but I suppose happiness is what keeps you going. We've been happy with the family and still enjoy them now. That's all part of life."
Recalling when they first met, Sheila said: "I was only 14, but, and I don't why, I fell for him right away. I used to run out and watch to see him on the back of his motorbike."
Congratulations on your Diamond anniversary Frank and Sheila, from all at the Wirral Globe 🎉🎉
