MEMBERS of a Wirral rugby club have undertaken a series of challenges in aid of a charity for people living with Motor Neurone Disease.

The Old Parkonians Rugby Club's fundraising efforts for Wirral Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) began with club director Steve Williams undertaking a gruelling cold water swim at Manley Mere sail sports and adventure trail in Cheshire.

A team of 40 people from the Birkenhead-based club then took part in a sponsored walk from Leasowe lighthouse to Harrison Drive and back on Sunday. This was followed by a family day for the community.

The club is raising funds for the charity in support for one of its members.

Their efforts have so far raised £5,453.

A spokesperson for the club said: "One courageous volunteer even had his chest and back waxed, watched by a delighted crowd, and the day also involved live music, stalls, fancy dress, inflatables, raffles, tombola and food outlets.

"Members of the Wirral MNDA group were there and as well as sharing information about their work they invited new volunteers to join them".

Debbie Williams, chair of Wirral MNDA group, said: "We are really keen to recruit volunteers and even if they just want to give an hour or two of their time to help out at specific events we’d love to hear from them.

"The efforts of the club have so far raised £5,453 and this will be used locally to support families living with MND. We want to thank Amy and Milli Whelan and the club’s management group".
