A PRIMARY school in Ellesmere Port have made a global impact after taking part in a prestigious TED Talks event.

Year 6 pupils from Woodlands Primary School shared their thoughts on issues that concern young people at a recent TEDxYouth event.

The event, held locally in July, has a worldwide reach and every child’s talk is now featured on the official TED website, marking a historic milestone for the school.

TEDxYouth events, known for amplifying young voices and ideas, permitted Woodlands a licence to enable their talented Year 6 pupils to share their unique perspectives and passions on various topics ranging from sustainability and mental health to technology’s future and social justice issues.

Headteacher, Dr Victoria Carr, who is a TEDx speaker herself, said: “This is an extraordinary moment for our school. I know personally how terrifying it can be but seeing our Year 6 pupils confidently present ideas they care about in front of such a respected platform is inspiring. It’s a testament to their creativity, thoughtfulness, and determination. Having them now featured on the TED website is beyond what we could have imagined!”

The students spent months working closely with teachers and parents to hone their presentations. This collaborative effort led to talks that were both engaging and impactful, resonating with audiences both young and old.

One of the participating pupils, Isla Simkins, shared her excitement about the experience at the time.

“Standing on the TEDx stage was like a dream come true!” said Isla.

“I talked about how dancing can make such a difference, and now I feel like I’m part of something much bigger. It’s amazing that people around the world can now hear my message.”

Parents and teachers alike praised the initiative, with many expressing how this experience has not only boosted the children’s confidence but has also shown them the power of their voices.

One parent reflected: “The journey to TEDxYouth has been incredible for our children. They’ve learned so much about public speaking, research, and developing their ideas. Seeing their talks now accessible globally is a proud moment for all of us.”

With their talks now live on the TED platform, the Woodlands pupils join an exclusive group of youth who have shared their insights on a global stage. The achievement places them alongside thought leaders and change-makers, solidifying their potential as future innovators.

Many pupils are more eager than ever to continue engaging with critical issues and using their voices for positive change, not least through recently implemented initiatives such as Lyfta and Philosophy for Children.

As the Year 6 children have since moved forward to secondary school, they have done so with the unique accolade of being TEDx speakers—an accomplishment that will undoubtedly inspire future generations of young thinkers.
