WIRRAL's Coastguard Rescue Team and the Army bomb squad attended West Kirby beach this morning (Monday, September 23) following concerns that 'a suspicious item' had been found in the area.

Coastguard Rescue Officers arrived on scene, located the item in question and sent photographs to the Army Bomb Disposal for analysis.

A safety cordon was put in place to keep the public away from the area until it could be confirmed what the item was.

The Army Bomb Disposal was unable to confirm what it was via the photographs so attended this morning for a closer inspection.

After investigation it was confirmed to be a buried traffic cone base. This was removed off the beach and collected by Wirral Council.

A post on Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team's Facebook page read: "The first informant did the correct thing by reporting the item. It's always best to get a suspicious item checked by the professionals.

"If you find something suspicious on the beach raise the alarm by dialling 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
