A naming ceremony for West Kirby RNLI's new D-class lifeboat is set to take place this weekend.

The Leonard Pownall will be officially launched during the event on Saturday (September 21), which starts at 12pm.

The ceremony is expected to last between 45 minutes to one hour and will be visible to the public on South Parade towards the sailing club, with ideal viewing from the Old Baths, opposite the lifeboat station gates.

After the naming, there will be a lifeboat and lifeguard jet ski water safety display on the lake.

The event marks the culmination of the station's Lifeboat Fund Appeal.

A spokesperson for the station said: "The aim was to raise £50,000 in 12 months. Thanks to incredible community support, we surpassed this target by raising over £73,000 in less than eight months.

"We invite the public to join us for this special occasion and to extend our thanks for the overwhelming support we’ve received over the years and continue to receive."

Dignitaries attending the event on Saturday include Captain Hugh Daglish LVO JP DL RN, the Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Cherry Povall JP, accompanied by the Mayoress of Wirral, Councillor Sheila Clarke MBE, and Peter Sparkes, RNLI chief executive.
