WELCOME to Behind the Lens, a feature that shines a light on the talented photographers in our Wirral Globe Camera Club group.

This week, we’re looking at Phil Burkhill’s favourite photographs and hearing about his passion for photography.

Phil, who lives in Seacombe, has been taking photographs for six years after watching the sunset in Anglesey.

When and why did you take up photography?

I would say my love for photography started on an evening’s trip to Anglesey in July 2018. It was a gorgeous summer’s evening as the UK was experiencing a heatwave at that time. I remember the colours as the sun was setting seemed quite unique to anything I had previously experienced and it felt magical. The photographs I took that evening gained some positive reviews which give me the confidence that I could spot a half decent photo. Since then, I have moved into my new home overlooking the River Mersey and my main hobby is now hiking. All this has, over time, enhanced my love for photography.

What do you love about taking pictures?

I feel like I get a rush of excitement when I spot a potential photo while I’m out and about as well as being in my flat overlooking the river. I like sharing my photos on social media - this is the positive side of social media. The groups that I’m a member of are all good natured and I always seem to get positive feedback. I have had quite a few of my photos featured on BBC News via BBC weather watchers, which makes me quite proud.

Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why?

I would have to say from my flat, looking out of the window. Every day is different, living where I live. I’m very lucky to have such fantastic views I have - my flat offers unrivalled views of Liverpool waterfront including The Three Graces. This presents some amazing photo opportunities and it’s become addictive for me, in a positive way.

What is your favourite subject matter and why?

I just love any form of nature which has come from my love of hiking. Most of my walks are costal and it’s very rare for my photos not to have the sea in the background. For me, photography is not about skill, it’s about being in the right place at the right time.

What do you enjoy about being part of our Camera Club on Facebook?

The Camera Club seems to attract a very high standard of photographers, whose work I could only wish to match myself. It’s a very good-natured group and a pleasure to be a part of.

If you could photograph anyone/any place/anything, who/what would it be?

I’ve been saying this to many of my friends and family since I took up photography - I would love to photograph Christ The Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It has everything I love - the sea in the background and the enormity of the statue itself with its art deco design. Who knows, maybe one day!
