A PANCAKES, waffles and ice cream shop is hoping to stay open into the early hours in the centre of Birkenhead. According to its JustEat page, Helly’s Sweets based on Grange Road West currently delivers food between 5pm and 11pm.

The shop, which is run by Helly Ice Cream Ltd, has asked Wirral Council to allow it to stay open from 10am until 2am. However, it would only be used for delivery between half past midnight and 2am each day following an agreement with Merseyside Police.

According to its Just Eat page, it serves candy floss, milkshakes, ice cream, cookie dough, pancakes, doughnuts, cakes, baklava, and churros. Though unverified, 49 Google reviews rate it 4.8 out of 5,

These described it as “extremely welcoming and kind” with “the most amazing deserts” and a red velvet cake that “is to die for.” Others praised staff working there calling them an “absolute credit to the community of Birkenhead” and “the desserts offered by this shop are among the tastiest and most delicious I have ever tasted.”

The licence for the ice cream shop is up for review by councillors on September 11. A representation has been made by the council’s planning department pointing out the building can only operate until midnight Sunday to Saturday due to previous restrictions placed on the property.

At the same meeting, councillors will also review a licence application for Rake Lane Food and Wine at 15 Rake Lane in Wallasey. They’re asking for permission to stay open from 6am to midnight and sell alcohol from 7am to midnight.

However two members of the public have raised concerns about the plans. A council report published ahead of the meeting referred to “current alcohol and drug related anti-social behaviour which the residents consider is a problem within the vicinity of the premises.”

It’s believed that if the licence is granted for the proposed opening hours, “this will result in a further increase of anti-social behaviour. There is also reference to concerns of increased traffic and parking within the vicinity of the premises if the application is granted.”
