A service was held in Ellesmere Port on Friday, August 30 to commemorate Merchant Navy Day.
The event took place at the Cenotaph in Civic Square at 11am and saw officers and cadets from TS Forward in attendance.
They commenced the service by raising the Red Ensign Flag as the bugler sounded Reveille. The naval hymn, Eternal Father, for those in peril on the sea, was sung and the Mayor, Councillor Paul Donovan welcomed everyone.
The service was led by Fr Mark Turner from St Paul’s Hooton, including a bible reading from the book of Jonah. The Act of Remembrance was read by Ellesmere Port and Bromborough MP Justin Madders.
As the Company Flag was lowered, bugler George Phillips played The Last Post. A one-minute silence was held, followed by wreaths laid by the Mayor and the Member of Parliament.
Prayers and a Blessing concluded the service and the National Anthem was then sung. Refreshments were then served in the Civic Hall Suite.
Merchant Navy Day was established in 2000 and is traditionally held on September 3 or thereabouts, the anniversary of the start of the Second World War.
