POLICE have stood down the search for a Second World War “bomb” in Birkenhead.

At around 9.40am on Tuesday morning (July 17) Merseyside Police were called to reports of an suspected unexploded bomb in a garden in Park Road South in Birkenhead.

It was believed that the “unexploded ordnance” was from the Second World War.

An area of woodland at Birkenhead Park was cordoned off as a precaution while police dealt with the incident.

Officers and military personnel have been searching at the scene since Tuesday but today Merseyside Police announced the search had been stood down.  

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “Following a report that ordnance from World War 2 may have been buried in a garden on Park Road South, Birkenhead, an extensive search was carried out by Merseyside Police and military personnel.

“Nothing of concern was found. 

“The scene was stood down at 1am today, Friday, July 19.

“We thank people for the patience while the incident was being dealt with.”
