THE Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight is among the 10 best free attractions in the UK, according to a study out today.

The data, released by Village Hotel, was sourced from Tripadvisor and revealed the UK’s top-rated free attractions along with other categories such as most popular free attractions and most popular cost-effective outdoor activities.

The Potter Trail in Edinburgh was crowned UK’s Top-Rated Free Attraction while Lady Lever Art Gallery came in the fifth spot.

Commenting on the report a spokesperson from Village Hotels said: "With the summer holidays coming up, many UK families will be looking to spend quality time together – and there are so many great places to explore up and down the UK.

"We wanted to share some of the UK’s best days out, that don’t cost an arm and a leg.”

The Lady Lever Art Gallery, which opened in 1922, was founded by William Hesketh Lever (1851-1925) and dedicated to the memory of his wife Elizabeth.

Lever's business empire made him a very rich man. By 1912 he had personal assets valued at nearly three million pounds.

The gallery is said to have one of the best collections of 18th century furniture in the country and its collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings is world-famous.

It opens from 10am - 5pm Tuesday to Sunday.
