WELCOME to Behind the Lens, a feature that shines a light on the talented photographers in our Wirral Globe Camera Club group.
This week, we’re looking at David Elms’ favourite photographs and hearing about his passion for photography.
David, who was born across the Mersey in Kirkdale and lived for most of his life in Skelmersdale, moved to New Brighton two years ago and enjoys taking pictures of the lighthouse and beaches close to home.

When and why did you take up photography?
I’ve always had an interest since childhood due to my dad with his camera. He was always capturing images of daily life where we lived but mostly on family holidays. Also, I always seeing historical images on postcards that showed past lives and places. My first camera at the age of 16 was an Olympic Trip and I used to subscribed to National Geographic for the photos alone.
What do you love about taking pictures?

Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why?
I like photographing the lighthouse and beaches around New Brighton. Wirral has spectacular beaches - they’re so scenic when it comes to sunsets. I like taking pictures anywhere that catches my eye. Most images are sunsets, sunrises and nature.
What is your favourite subject matter and why?
Definitely scenery and landscapes - the changing light and weather constantly affect the beautiful scenes. I love to share my images online with those who may not have been able to view them at the time.

What do you enjoy about being part of our Camera Club on Facebook?
I enjoy seeing the photos taken by other members and I often feel inspired by them too. There are some seriously talented people in the club with a great eye for a stunning photo.
If you could photograph anyone/any place/anything, who/what would it be?
I’d love to travel the world capturing life as a National Geographic photographer, be it natural and wild or human and urbanised, even industrial.
